Campaign to fight GBV in colleges launched
A publicity to tackle rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence in higher learning institutions has been launched. The Safer Campuses Campaign has been launched in campuses across the country by Unesco under the Our Rights, Our Lives, Our Future Plus project. The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Kenya Medical Training College and the University of Nairobi. It seeks to empower young people to achieve positive health, education and gender equality. More than 2,500 skilled workers certified
Kenya is making strides in empowering individuals with informal and non-formal skills through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative. The programme is designed to formally recognise and validate the skills. So far, 650 practitioners have been trained and certified, stationed at colleges for the transformative process. Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) Chairperson Stanley Kiptis announced that, since March, over 2,500 candidates have been assessed and certified through the RPL process. “They are now eligible for employment and ready for further knowledge acquisition along the skills pathway. They have also been registered in the Kenya National Qualifications Database as credible qualifications,” said Mr Kiptis.

Govt urged to include higher learning institutions in housing programme
The government was on Tuesday urged to collaborate with universities and other tertiary institutions in constructing hostels to address their demands owing to the huge population of students. The State Department of Education’s KSh1 billion budget has been reallocated by the Treasury to the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) in order to build classrooms for junior secondary school (JSS) students. Prior Learning policy recognition approved by Ministry of Education
The Ministry of Education has approved the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy which recognises skilled workers in the informal sector who do not have any academic documents. Through the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), the policy will be launched mid-next month with hundreds of immigrants and refugees set to be among the beneficiaries. According to data from the government, 92% of youths in the country have unrecognized competencies acquired through formal and informal means but not certified to practice.
