A section of Nairobi’s Gikomba market was razed down at dawn on Thursday, the second time this year that an inferno has hit the country’s largest retail market.
The cause of the blaze is still unknown.
Witnesses said the fire started at 2.00am, starting from the groceries section of the open-air market before it was contained.
Several such incidents have caused severe damage at the popular market over the years, sometimes leading to deaths.
In June 2018, at least 15 people died while more than 60 were injured in a night fire at the market.
