Governor Natembeya delivered the moving tribute on Saturday at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, the ancestral home of the Odinga family where he led a high-powered delegation from the Western region to condole with the family. During the visit, Natembeya presented 15 bulls and other foodstuffs to the Odinga family as a symbolic gesture of respect and appreciation for Raila’s immense contributions to national unity, democracy, and governance
In his address, Natembeya praised Raila’s unwavering commitment to democracy, good governance, and national cohesion, describing him as a leader who consistently prioritized the interests of ordinary Kenyans above personal gain. He particularly highlighted Raila’s role in pushing for constitutional reforms, which culminated in the establishment of the 2010 Constitution and the subsequent devolution of power, a system that has significantly empowered local governments and improved service delivery.
“The devolved functions we now enjoy where counties can make independent decisions and implement development projects are among the fruits of Raila Odinga’s tireless struggle. His advocacy for equity, justice, and inclusion changed the course of this nation,” Natembeya stated amid applause from mourners.
The governor lauded Raila as a fierce critic and fearless statesman whose firm stance on governance and accountability compelled both past and present administrations to uphold the principles of transparency and justice.
“Raila was never afraid to confront those in power when the rights of Kenyans were at stake. He stood as the voice of the voiceless and a beacon of hope for millions who believed in a fair and equitable Kenya,” he said.
Natembeya also reflected on Raila’s enduring spirit of resilience, noting that despite facing political detentions, electoral injustices, and betrayal, the former Prime Minister remained steadfast in his belief in a better Kenya.
“Even when the odds were stacked against him, Raila remained calm, strategic, and deeply patriotic. His political journey taught us that leadership is not about personal reward but about service to humanity,” he added.
Calls for unity and continuity of Raila’s vision
Turning his attention to the future, Governor Natembeya urged political leaders from Nyanza and Western Kenya to close ranks and unite in the aftermath of Raila’s death. He emphasized that Raila’s dream of a united Kenya could only be realized if leaders from all regions worked together in harmony.
“I want to plead with my brothers and sisters from Luo Nyanza, while Baba may have left us physically, his vision and ideals live on. Let us not let his sacrifices go in vain. This is the time to stand together, speak with one voice, and continue what Raila started,” he said.
Natembeya, who has been championing regional cooperation under his “Tawe Movement,” signalled his intention to work closely with leaders from the Luo and Luhya communities to foster unity ahead of2027 general elections. He stressed that the partnership between the two communities could create a formidable political and developmental force in Western Kenya.
“I will extend an olive branch to my Luo brothers and sisters. Raila was our leader, too — a mentor who guided many of us into politics. It is only right that we continue with the spirit of unity he cherished so much. Together, we can build on the foundation he laid,” he remarked.
Unity beyond politics
Beyond politics, Natembeya called for continued inter-community cooperation in economic development, education, and cultural preservation, emphasizing that Raila’s legacy transcends political boundaries. He urged leaders to emulate Raila’s inclusive leadership style and his ability to mobilize diverse communities toward a common national goal.
“Baba’s leadership was never about tribe or region; it was about Kenya. His legacy should remind us that unity is our greatest strength. We must continue working across borders and beyond political affiliations to move our nation forward,” he asserted.
The governor was accompanied by Bungoma gubernatorial aspirant Zachariah Baraza a key figure in the Tawe Movement alongside several dignitaries, including members of the county assemblies, clergy, and opinion leaders from Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Kakamega, and Busia counties.
Baraza echoed Natembeya’s sentiments, describing Raila as “a father of devolution and democracy whose courage and selflessness gave hope to countless Kenyans.” He pledged to support Natembeya’s call for unity among Western and Nyanza leaders as a way of honouring Raila’s legacy.
Nation in mourning
Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, was widely regarded as one of the most influential opposition figures in Africa. His decades-long political journey was marked by advocacy for multi-party democracy, electoral justice, and constitutional reforms. His passing has plunged the nation into mourning, with tributes continuing to pour in from leaders across the political divide and the international community.
As the country reflects on his monumental contributions, leaders like Governor Natembeya are urging Kenyans to channel their grief into action by upholding the democratic ideals and unity that Raila Odinga embodied throughout his lifetime.
“Kenya has lost a great son, but his spirit will continue to inspire generations. Let us honour him not by tears alone, but by walking the path he charted for us — a path of courage, integrity, and unity,” Natembeya concluded.
