Governor Sonko agrees to withdraw all court cases against NMS

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says he is set to withdraw all court cases filed against the Nairobi Metropolitan Services led by Major General Abdala Badi.



Speaking in Nairobi, Thursday, Sonko said he had reached an agreement with Badi and they had ironed out the contentious issues that had forced him to move to court to challenge the Deed of Transfer that saw the formation of NMS.



“After yesterday we agreed to polish the issues in the MOU and we agreed with my brother Badi that all cases in court will be withdrawn to allow for service delivery and development,” said Sonko.



This comes a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta urged Sonko and Badi to bury their differences.



The President told Sonko to stop playing politics at the expense of Nairobi but work together with the DG to serve the residents.



Speaking during celebrations to mark International Youth Day in Nairobi on Wednesday, the President insisted that the two leaders embrace unity for the purpose of service delivery.



Sonko, in a letter dated July 24, 2020, had expressed his intent to terminate the Deed of Transfer of four critical functions from the County Government to the National Government, citing illegalities in the agreement.



The Governor claimed he has been sidelined in the running of Kenya’s capital city, and is contesting the appointment of military officers, led by Major General Badi to run Nairobi.



Sonko, who was also barred from accessing his city hall office as he battles graft charges, accused President Kenyatta’s administration of bullying him. He claimed the opinion that the Deed of Transfer is fatally flawed from the onset and beyond any redemption.



Two weeks ago, Badi downplayed Sonko’s move to withdraw from the agreement that saw NMS take control of key operations of the city.



He said he was not concerned by Sonko’s move insisting that NMS would continue delivering on its mandate as assigned by the President.
