Fake gold racket suspects to spend 15 more days in custody

Police will detain 15 people arrested on Monday with fake gold for a week to enable detectives conclude investigations.



Milimani Magistrate’s court granted the request but reduced the number of days from the two weeks sought by the police, saying the period will be sufficient to finalise the matter and decide the charges to prefer against the suspects.



In their application, they argued that they needed the time to establish the nationalities of three of the of the suspects and analyse data from mobile phones and other electronic gadgets, including computers recovered from them.



Some of them were arrested at a heavily-guarded house in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa suburb, where metal boxes and eight vehicles were seized and towed to Kilimani Police Station.



At least three politicians have been linked with a racket associated with the scam, reportedly a scheme to defraud the United Arab Emirates of billions of shilings.
