She emphasized that specialized industries like renewable energy, carbon sinks, sustainable agriculture, and essential minerals will receive attention.
“Dr. William Samoei Ruto, His Excellency the President of Kenya, and the leadership of the African Union Commission will lead the continent in exhibiting Africa’s green energy potentials during the summit, which include solar, wind, and hydro.” She said there is energy that, if harnessed, could power the entire planet while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“At the summit, we will invite African nations to present their potential for vital minerals. We will argue in favor of processing lithium, cobalt, and other vital minerals in Africa in order to both benefit our young people by providing jobs and to lessen the carbon footprints associated with processing elsewhere.”
The CS said the continent will use the high-level Heads of State and Government meeting to pitch for and attract new development partners to support its green growth agenda. He made his remarks during a diplomatic briefing of African Ambassadors on ACS preparations held in Nairobi on Wednesday.
“Africa is providing the world its resources, and Africa is asking the world to bring Africa its cash. Instead of an aid for climate change summit, we are convening a trade and investment summit,” CS Tuya emphasized.
In the first-ever ACS, the CS stated that Kenya looks forward to the approval of the Nairobi Declaration by African leaders, which will address the continent’s climate financing shortfalls and include reform of international multilateral financial institutions.
The declaration will also include recommendations for changing the way multilateral development banks operate so they can support low- and middle-income nations in order to keep them out of debt-related trouble and free up resources for climate change initiatives.
The declaration, according to her, will extend an invitation to capital from across the world to utilize Africa’s assets and resources in ways that promote sustainable development and promote green growth as we work to reduce global carbon emissions.
The CS also discussed the African Heads of State and Government meeting on the Africa Climate Summit that took place on Wednesday afternoon. He was joined at the meeting by Environment and Climate Change PS Eng Festus Ng’eno, Kenya’s Climate Envoy Mr. Ali Mohamed, and ACS CEO Mr. Joseph Ng’ang’a.
“This afternoon, His Excellency President Dr. William Ruto will preside over an online meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC).”
“To prepare for the summit’s outcomes becoming African Union resolutions, this afternoon’s meeting will be a step in the African Union process. The draft summit position paper will be discussed at the gathering, among other things, and sent to the various AU procedures.”
“The position paper mentions the relationship between climate change and development. It shows that low-carbon development is feasible as we investigate green growth,” CS Tuya told the envoys.
The Cabinet Secretary urged the African Ambassadors at the same time to persuade their Heads of State and Government to attend the ACS, claiming that its conclusions will alter the conversation in Africa about climate action.
“After this meal, I really ask that you call your government. Please encourage your presidents and heads of state to attend this summit. It is the first time in the conversation on climate change that Africa exhibits her capacity to assist the world in coping with climate change,” CS Tuya argued.
At the briefing, Dr. Harsen Nyambe Nyambe of the African Union Commission (AUC), Amb. Beyene Russom, the Eritrean ambassador to Kenya, and Baringo South MP Charles Kamuren, who serves as vice chair of the National Assembly’s Environment Committee, all spoke.
While Dr. Nyambe delivered the African Union Commission’s promise to continue working with Kenya to ensure the success of the Africa Climate Summit, Hon. Kamuren gave the ambassadors assurance that the National Assembly fully supported the ACS.
“The leadership of the African Union Commission remains committed to continue working with the Government of the Republic of Kenya to ensure that this Summit becomes a success,” Dr. Nyambe stated.
The ACS delivery plan was explained to the ambassadors by Joseph Ng’ang’a, who also highlighted ways that African nations might assist with budgetary planning and other summit preparations.
