
Algeria and Russia held talks in the capital Algiers on Monday to discuss ways of strengthening military cooperation, with a focus on “areas of mutual interest.”
Algerian Army Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Said Chengriha, held talks in the capital Algiers on Monday with Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, to discuss ways of strengthening military cooperation. Russia is one of Algeria’s main suppliers of weapons and military equipment, and the two countries have been working together closely in recent years to boost their defence capabilities.
During their meeting, Chengriha and Patrushev exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues of common interest, and stressed the importance of continuing to cooperate in order to address the challenges facing the world today.
The meeting between the two military commanders was focused on discussing ways to improve bilateral military cooperation, as well as exchanging views on various issues of common concern. The statement released by the military made it clear that both sides were receptive to the idea of improving their working relationship, and that they would continue to communicate in order to identify opportunities for further cooperation.
The Russian Minister of Defense, Sergey Shoygu, met with his Argentine counterpart, Oscar Aguad, on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries. Russian presidential aide, Nikolay Patrushev, is also in Argentina on a three-day visit. In a statement released by Argentina’s Ministry of Defense, Chengriha said Patrushev’s visit is “evidence of the firm and explicit will of the two countries to strengthen the strategic and historical partnership that characterises their bilateral relations, especially in the field of military cooperation.”
Confront challenges, threats
Patrushev and his Algerian counterpart discussed a range of issues related to the two countries’ strategic partnership. Patrushev underlined the depth of relations between Russia and Algeria, hailing the North African country’s role in bringing peace and stability to the region. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together to confront common challenges and threats. They also discussed a range of regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune is scheduled to visit Russia later this month. This will be his first foreign trip since taking office in December, and is seen as an attempt to improve Algeria’s relations with the international community. Tebboune has said that he wants to diversify Algeria’s foreign partnerships, and Russia is seen as an important potential ally. The two countries have cooperated in the past on energy projects, and Russia has been eager to increase its investment in Algeria.
Russia and Algeria have enjoyed a strong military alliance for many years, with Algeria being one of the largest buyers of Russian weapons. This alliance has been beneficial for both countries, providing Russia with a valuable ally in the region and allowing Algeria to obtain high-quality military equipment.
