Football Kenya Federation has asked the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to unfreeze two of their bank accounts that were frozen due to misappropriation of funds at the federation.
Kurunzi is in possession of a letter addressed to the DCI and copied to the Director of Public Prosecutions, dated 30 November 2022, by FKF CEO Barry Otieno pleading for the unfreezing of the federation’s accounts at the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and NCBA banks respectively. Neither Kiambu Road nor the DPP have responded to the said letter and if theyhave then Kurunzi is yet to lay its hands on the same.
According to Otieno, the case involving the misappropriation of funds that led to the freezing of the said accounts had since been dropped.
However, former FKF boss Nick Mwendwa appeared in a Kiambu Court for the mention of the matter Otieno claimed to have been concluded.
The case on Mwendwa could not however continue as the case was adjourned to Wednesday February 22, 2023 because the file had not been brought before the jury.
FKF through Barry Otieno have gone further to explain that they were reinstated by Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and everything is in order.
“FKF wishes to request your good office to inform KCB and NCBA to operationalize the said FKF accounts domiciled in their respective banks to allow for the smooth roll-out of football activities in the country,” the letter reads in part.

Otieno further claimed that: “The federation has since learnt that investigations into the aforementioned matter has since been concluded. However, the DCI Serious Crimes Unit is yet to communicate the same to the said banks to enable the federation transact.”
The federation’s accounts still remain garnished and it is understood that Otineo’s letter is in anticipation of the FKF receiving a whooping KSh 800 million in grants from world football governing body – FIFA.
Kurunzi understands that the money from Zurich could be as much as in excess of KSh1.5 billion if the FIFA House releases all the funds that Kandanda House had not received from some time in 2021.
