Ruto coast tour highlights mounting challenges amidst local discontent

In his latest tour of Kenya’s coastal region, President William Ruto aimed to solidify support by unveiling development projects and reiterating commitments to address longstanding issues.
Despite backing from prominent local leaders such as Ali Hassan Joho, Amason Kingi, Mohammed Ali, and Salim Mvurya, the President faced palpable discontent from residents over unfulfilled promises, persistent insecurity, water scarcity, and pervasive poverty.
Repackaging Old Promises
During his visit, President Ruto relaunched several projects, some of which had been initiated during previous administrations. Notably, he recommissioned the KSh2.1 billion Bamba-Ganze-Kilifi road project, originally launched in November 2021 by then Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.
“This project was my brainchild during my tenure as Deputy President. It will enhance connectivity and boost local economies,Ruto defended the move.
However, critics argue that such re-launches are mere political theatrics lacking substantive progress.
“The President is adept at repackaging old projects to create an illusion of development. What we need is genuine implementation, not repeated ceremonies,” Mukhisa Kituyi.
The region continues to grapple with security challenges, including sporadic attacks and rising crime rates. Residents who talked to Kurunzi News expressed frustration over the government’s perceived inaction.
“We live in fear daily. The government’s promises to enhance security have not materialized,” lamented Mombasa resident Fatuma Mwinyi.
Economic hardships further exacerbate local grievances. High unemployment rates, especially among the youth, have led to increased poverty and social unrest. While President Ruto announced plans to create jobs through the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone skepticism remains.
“We’ve heard these promises before. Our youths are still jobless, and families continue to struggle,” noted Kilifi elder Hassan Charo.
Water scarcity: A persistent plight
Water scarcity remains a critical issue in the coastal counties. Despite previous assurances, many communities still lack access to clean and reliable water sources. During the tour, President Ruto highlighted the KSh4 billion Baricho water works project in Malindi, intended to supply 40 million liters of water to households in Mombasa and Kilifi counties. However, this project had already been commissioned five years prior.
“Revisiting old projects without tangible progress doesn’t quench our thirst,” expressed environmental activist Aisha Bakari.
Adding to the President’s challenges is the recent uproar over proposed tax increases, which have sparked public protests and deadly violence. These measures have been met with resistance from citizens already burdened by economic hardships. The government’s response to the demonstrations has been criticized for its heavy-handedness, further fueling public discontent.
Local leaders, including Ali Hassan Joho and Amason Kingi, have historically supported the President, facilitating political alliances aimed at regional development. However, the growing disconnect between governmental promises and ground realities has led to strained relations.
“Our support for the administration is contingent upon real change for our people. We cannot endorse empty promises,” stated a coastal Member of Parliament who preferred anonymity.
