Elizabeth Iminza, the first Deputy Secretary-General of FORD–Kenya, has officially confirmed her defection from the party to join the United Democratic Party (UDP) led by veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo.
In her announcement on Sunday, 7 September 2025, Iminza said the move was motivated by her desire to embrace a new political home that prioritises inclusivity, grassroots empowerment, and real economic change.
“I have served FORD–Kenya with loyalty and dedication, but I believe the future lies in a movement that speaks directly to the people’s needs. The UDP, under the leadership of Hon. Jirongo, offers that vision,” she said in her statement.
Iminza’s exit marks a significant blow to FORD–Kenya, which has been working to strengthen its foothold under party leader Moses Wetang’ula. Her decision is expected to have ripple effects in the Western Kenya political bloc, a region where FORD–Kenya has historically drawn strong support.
Reacting to the news, a senior FORD–Kenya NEC member expressed regret but wished her well in her new political journey. “She has been a valuable member of our team, and her absence will be felt,” the official said.
Iminza’s defection could boost UDP’s profile as it seeks to expand its national influence ahead of the 2027 general election. “Her grassroots networks and organisational skills make her a valuable addition to Jirongo’s team,” noted Peter Njoroge, a Nairobi-based political analyst.
With Iminza now in the UDP fold, attention turns to how her defection will reshape alliances and voter dynamics in the region, and whether more leaders could follow her path in the months ahead.
