Families in Nairobi and its surroundings are substituting meat for eggs in their diet amid high cost of living claiming it is more tolerable for them.
Some city residents have chosen the delicacy because a crate of eggs costs between Ksh. 430 and Ksh. 560. “At least once or twice a week, my family used to enjoy some Nyama. However, we were compelled to reduce our spending, according to Miriam Mokua.
A crate of eggs costs less to purchase for Mokua, a resident of Donholm Estate, than a kilogram of beef does. “My family can survive on a crate of eggs for at least a week. ”As resources are currently scarce, it helps reduce expenditure,” she continued.
Darius Omollo, a carpenter by trade, is a few meters away from her. ”Mambo ya kula nyama nilisahau”(I had to temporarily quit eating meat) ”Mimi naishi mwenyewe.” (I am single.) Omollo declared.
He continued by saying that the exorbitant expense of living had compelled him to move his family to the village months earlier. “Imagine sending my family home and still not being able to afford a quarter kilogram of meat,” he complained. Omollo claimed that he chooses to eat Eggs or Omena as a substitute.
However, considering the recent increase in fuel prices, traders worry that the prices could skyrocket even further. “The price of transportation has skyrocketed. Sending a rider to deliver eggs is now more expensive, according to business owner Mercy Kabaka. She claims that the average cost of transportation has nearly doubled, which has reduced her earnings at the Kitengela-based Kabaka Egg Centre.
According to experts, eggs are a great source of vitamin A, vitamin B5, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, selenium, calcium, and protein.
