The controversy surrounding the late Boaz Ogeto continues to intensify after it emerged that, among other questions, the deceased’s remains had been moved from Lee to Montezuma Funeral Home in a move believed to be a well choreographed scheme to isolate the widow from participating in the burial.
Ogeto, 36, died early last month after succumbing to cancer and his death has led to a bitter fallout among the Kenyan diaspora community, especially the Abagusii, who mobilized themselves in large numbers to raise funds to support his treatment and repatriation home for final rites.
However, this past week has witnessed heightened tension with the Kisiis in the United States accusing a section of them of “stealing the money raised to help Boaz wife and Baby Asher”.
“These two people – Sam and Doro, think that people are fools but they cannot do this to Boaz and go Scott-free,” one diaspora source told Kurunzi News.
The diaspora community has pointed fingers at one Sam Nyabiosi who lives in Delaware and a Ms. Dorothy Ogega, for “manipulating everything and keeping plans about Boaz a secret after we raised all the money”.
Following the memorial service which took place on 26 January in Delaware, Nyabiosi allegedly shut out everyone including the committee members and turned the funeral arrangements into a one-man show.
“We were supposed to meet on the Monday after the memorial but that was not to be, Sam insulted everyone and closed the committee group. When we asked about the body because we were being asked by the people who contributed to send Boaz home for a decent burial, he said ‘Boaz is in heaven’,” a disgruntled committee member told Kurunzi News.
It is unclear why the body was transported to Kenyan unannounced and neither is there an explanation as to why the body has been moved morgues after it arrived in Nairobi.
The widow has cried foul telling our sources that she has been kept in the dark about everything.
“Gaki mbona mnanifanyia hivi? (surely, why are you doing this to me),” she lamented to one diasporan on learning that her husband’s body was already in Kenya. She confirmed later that she had been called to view the body at Lee Funeral Home but it turns out a few days later that it is now at Montezuma.
Social media has been awash with accusations of foul play with fingers pointing at Nyabiosi and Ms. Ogega of working with a section of the family to deny Boaz’s friends the opportunity to mourn their friend.
“We were waiting to receive Boaz at the airport but they sneaked his body into the country without telling us, we want to know why,” a friend of the deceased stated.
Several friends have taken to TikTok, where the late was a big name, to express their frustration over the manner the whole issue has been handled. They are turning their guns on the family accusing the mother of trying to keep away the widow because “hawamtaki” (they don’t want her).
“Wamemuita malaya wakasema hawezi chukua anything ya Boaz (they have called her a whore who will get nothing from Boaz),” said another friend on their TikTok.
On Saturday, following scathing attacks by the diaspora community during a long meeting over Zoom on Friday night where they resolved to fight for justice for “Boaz, his wife and child and his legacy”, a statement purportedly from the family of the late was issued praising Nyabiosi and asking that all family issues be addressed through one Mr. Moreka.
However, this statement was dismissed by the friends of the deceased both at home and in the diaspora as an attempt by Nyabiosi to gag the people from asking for accountability for the resources contributed through different platforms.
Curiously, early on Sunday, Nyabiosi and Ogega allegedly released a burial plans schedule without any reference to the family, prompting further questions as to who exactly is planning the burial and why things are being kept a top secret.
The diaspora community has vowed to pursue all legal avenues possible to get Nyabiosi and those allied to him to account for all the monies raised including funds that had been mobilized to pay for Boaz’s treatment in Texas, which never happened.
“We are asking him to come out clean and answer our questions failure to which we shall seek accountability through prosecution because this is money that was sent to him for charity,” another source revealed.
Kurunzi News can confirm that friends of the deceased at home and abroad have been pushing for minimal expenditure of the money raised so that a significant amount of the money can be given to the widow to help her raise the son, Asher, who is two years old.
“Boaz told all of us whenever he could that we should not let his son suffer when he is gone and we will fight for that to the bitter end,” Dr. Milton Nyakundi told Kurunzi News.
“Sadly, some of those adversely mentioned have been quoted questioning why people are so obsessed with Baby Asher and not the rest of the family, which speaks to a wider scheme against the widow.”
It has been reported that the deceased’s family does not want the widow involved in anything and has ordered that Boaz’s house will be taken by his younger brother. One of Boaz’s sisters who lives in Canada and had a frosty relationship with the deceased has been accused of being the mastermind of the entire plan which allegedly started as the disease took its toll on the late Boaz.
The widow is appealing for help from Boaz’s friends, saying she is helpless and is not even sure she will be given the chance to bury her husband.
