Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i returns to Kenya from UK.
Embattled former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has jetted back to Kenya after a two-week trip to the United Kingdom. His return comes amid mounting pressure from President William Ruto’s administration.
Matiang’i has been widely criticised for his role in the government’s response to the wave of violence that has hit Kenya in recent months. Some have even called for his resignation, accusing him of failing to properly tackle the security situation.
Matiang’i is said to have gone to the European nation to attend to an urgent private family matter, in a private capacity.
According to sources, the former CS landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 10:00 pm on Saturday night aboard KLM Flight 0566.
The source revealed to Kurunzi News that Matiang’i is expected to present himself to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters on Monday at 11:00 am.
This is in connection with the ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of office by the Cabinet Secretary.
Matiang’i is expected to provide detectives with information that will help them in their probe.
Matiang’i has been under probe by the DCI, questioning him over the alleged police raid at his house in February. The DCI has been questioning him about the raid, and whether or not he was involved in it. Matiang’i has denied any involvement in the raid, and has said that he was not home at the time it happened.
Earlier, Senior Superintendent of Police Michael Sang issued a directive compelling Matiang’i to appear at DCI headquarters on grounds that he could have published false information regarding the alleged police raid a fortnight ago. The move came after photos and videos of the supposed raid, which was conducted by armed police officers, circulated on social media.
Matiang’i had initially downplayed the incident, saying that the police were merely carrying out “standard procedure” and that there was no need for alarm. However, the DCI is now investigating whether the raid was indeed carried out properly and whether Matiang’i statements were accurate.
Although Mr. Kinuthia’s lawyer, Danstan Omari, later defended him, Mr. Kinuthia’s actions still caused significant consternation. The DCI did not follow the procedures on how summons ought to be served, and Mr. Kinuthia’s legal representatives had not received such a directive. This carelessness on the part of the DCI allowed Mr. Kinuthia to take advantage of the situation.
Omari added that if the DCI followed the set guidelines on the summons, Matiang’i would willingly present himself for questioning. He noted that the DCI had been receptive to their demands so far, and that he hoped they would continue to be cooperative in this matter. Failure to comply with the guidelines, Omari warned, would result in further action being taken.
