Governor Kawira Mwangaza of Meru County has made an announcement that she is seriously considering joining the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, led by President William Ruto. This comes after her victory in the Meru governor polls, where she defeated Mithika Linturi of UDA and Kiraitu Murungi of Azimio party.
It was during the 30th anniversary celebration of the Solution Sacco at Kinoru Stadium when Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, addressing the audience, encouraged Governor Mwangaza to join UDA. He highlighted the support they had given her during her fallout with the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and emphasised the need for unity and peace in Meru County.
Gachagua stated, “We have told the governor to stop working alone and join us (UDA). We are ready to embrace and work with you.” This appeal seems to have resonated with Governor Mwangaza, as she had previously been hesitant to align herself with major political parties.
During the 2017 campaign season, Mwangaza acknowledged that her association with well-established parties almost cost her the woman representative seat. However, after Gachagua’s plea, she seems to be reconsidering her stance on joining popular parties.
Mwangaza further revealed that the decision to join UDA was influenced by the sentiments of the people she represents. “The people asked if I should join UDA, and they agreed. That is why I have chosen to wear a yellow dress today, to show that I am considering their request,” she explained.
These remarks were made by Governor Mwangaza at Kaaga Primary School in the North Imenti constituency of Meru County. It is evident that her decision to join UDA is not solely based on personal ambitions but also on the desires and interests of the people she serves.
By expressing her willingness to join UDA, Governor Mwangaza is indicating her commitment to working collaboratively with the ruling party and its leadership. This move could potentially pave the way for a united front in Meru County, as it aims to address the conflicts between MCAs and the county boss.
As the political landscape in Kenya continues to evolve, it is crucial for leaders like Governor Mwangaza to navigate these changes effectively. By considering the request to join UDA, she demonstrates her ability to adapt to the shifting political tides and prioritise the needs of her constituents.
