
It was a good weekend for home players as the NCBA Coast Open went down at the Mombasa Golf Club and the Karen Country Club’s Ladies Medal Tournament went down.
At the NCBA Coast Open – Barry Cup at the Mombasa Golf Club, Henry Kamau emerged as the champion, finishing two-under-par 211 over the three-day tournament, while Grace Gichuki delivered a commanding performance to power to victory in Karen.
Kamau’s consistent performance across the three rounds (73, 67, 71) saw him edge Sammy Mulama of Golf Park Golf Club by a single stroke in a closely contested competition. Eldoret’s Danny Chelogoi finished third with a total score of 215 (+2).
The NCBA Golf Series also saw four more golfers book their slots for the Grand Finale following their triumphs during the Eldoret Golf Club qualifying event.
Playing off handicap 34, Dennis Rono carded an impressive round of 64 to emerge the overall winner. Shadrack Ngetich (handicap 6) and Jedidah Keitany (handicap 21) emerged as the men’s and ladies’ winners, respectively, while Jonathan Barorot (handicap 17) emerged as the Junior winner.
The tournament drew 65 top amateur players from across the country and featured a total prize purse of KSh. 400,000, with Kamau taking home KSh. 92,500.
The NCBA Golf Series action heads to Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club this weekend, offering yet another opportunity for more golfers to book the grand finale slots.
Meanwhile, at the Karen Country Club, Gichuki won both Division A and the overall gross title with a net score of 69 and 87, respectively.
The tournament, which brought together over 100 lady golfers, was sponsored for the fourth consecutive year by leading integrated marketing communications agency, IMG Kenya.
In Division A, Gichuki was followed closely by Dorcas Mbalanya as runner-up with 70 nett, while Wayua Mululu secured third place with 73.
The Karen Ladies Medal Tournament also recognized special category winners, with Monica Kipchumba taking home the putting prize with 28 putts on countback. Milcah Kamere was awarded Best First Nine with 31 nett, while Minnie Waithera took Best Second Nine honours with 30 nett.
Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, IMG Kenya CEO Peter Gacheru expressed pride in the company’s continued support for the tournament, noting that IMG Kenya’s longstanding involvement in the sport for over 20 years through events such as the Magical Kenya Open, corporate golf series, and the Sunshine Development Tour – East Africa Swing.
