In a riveting live interview on all Luyha radio stations, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka confidently declared his intention to run for president in 2027.
In what appears to be a well laid plan by the anti-Ruto camp, they are holding interviews with local stations in efforts to declaw President Ruto waning his political vet ahead of the 2027 contest.
The honcho addressed both his political aspirations and the ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo. His comments came during a wide-ranging conversation on issues affecting Kenya and the region, generating significant attention from political analysts and his supporters.
Kalonzo, did not shy away from confirming his ambitions for the highest office in the land. The former Vice President and seasoned politician has long been considered a potential presidential candidate, but his repeated attempts in previous elections have not borne fruit.
However, his latest statements signal a renewed determination to run again in 2027, saying, “I am prepared, and I will be on the ballot.”
The Wiper boss emphasized his readiness and the party’s strategy to rally support across the country.
“We have laid the foundation over the years, and we will continue to build a broad-based coalition. My focus is on uniting Kenyans, ensuring that all communities feel represented, and addressing the issues of economic growth, security, and equity,” Kalonzo asserted.
When asked about his previous bids and his relationship with other political leaders, Kalonzo maintained that the time for uniting the country is now more than ever. His comments on the importance of inclusivity resonated with the audience, signaling his approach to coalition politics.
His remarks also touched on his longstanding role in championing the welfare of marginalized communities, especially in the Ukambani region, which has traditionally supported him. Kalonzo hinted at the possibility of seeking new alliances ahead of the 2027 race.
“We are not just looking at the traditional political strongholds. We are talking to all corners of Kenya. We want to build a nation where no one is left behind,” he remarked.
During the interview, the conversation also shifted to the volatile situation in the neighboring DRC where ongoing conflict has led to a humanitarian crisis and regional instability. Kalonzo was blunt in his assessment, calling for urgent regional intervention and stronger international cooperation.
“It is heartbreaking to see the people of the DRC continue to suffer. The conflict has persisted for far too long, and the regional bodies, including the African Union, must do more to ensure peace,” Kalonzo said. He highlighted the role of East African leaders in addressing the crisis, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to peacekeeping and diplomacy in the region.
Kalonzo also called for a concerted effort by the international community to support the DRC’s government in restoring stability.
“Kenya has always been a peacekeeping nation, and we will continue to offer our support to the DRC. It is critical that we address the root causes of the conflict, such as the exploitation of resources and the presence of armed militias,” he remarked.
In a brief statement to the press, Mudavadi faulted Kalonzo’s remarks on DRC crisis terming it inciting but emphasized that the government is committed addressing its own domestic challenges before venturing into regional matters.
“It is important to remember that the security and well-being of Kenyans must come first. While we must be concerned about our neighbors, we have not lost sight of the fact that we need to stabilize our own economy, ensure that our youth are employed, and strengthen our institutions,” Mudavadi stated.
While Mudavadi did not directly challenge Kalonzo’s presidential ambitions, his comments indicate the possibility of a stiff political rivalry in the upcoming election cycle. Many have speculated about the likelihood of a political showdown between Kalonzo and Ruto particularly given their long-standing ties and respective leadership positions within the political landscape.
Political analysts have been quick to analyze Kalonzo’s bold statements, with many viewing them as a sign that he is setting the stage for a fiercely contested 2027 presidential race.
Some believe that Kalonzo’s appeal to the marginalized communities and his emphasis on unity could be a significant advantage in garnering support, while others point to the challenge of breaking through the dominance of Kenya’s two largest political parties.
On social media, the reactions to Kalonzo’s bid have been mixed. Supporters of the Wiper leader expressed their enthusiasm, with many hailing his call for inclusivity and the unity of all Kenyans. On the other hand, critics have questioned his ability to unite the country, citing his past political missteps.
With just over two years to go before the 2027 elections, the political landscape remains fluid, and Kalonzo’s declaration of his intentions has added a new layer of uncertainty.
As the dust settles from this latest round of statements, it remains to be seen how Kalonzo will navigate the complex political terrain, particularly with him now emerging as major contender for the presidency.
