Kenya cup defending champions Kabras Sugar will meet former champions KCB rugby in the final of the local rugby scene scheduled for Kakamega this weekend.
In Kakamega, Kabras Sugar touched down four tries and a conversion to silence visitors Kenya Harlequin 22-8 in a tight semi-final at the Kakamega Show ground on Saturday.
On the other hand, KCB fullback Darwin Mukidza was the tormentor-in-chief as the bankers put up a strong fight to edge visiting Menengai Oilers 38-20 to set up yet another final against the Sugarmen.
The ever-present Mukidza got the bankers off to a flying start with two tries in succession, taking the bankers’ lead to a 12-0 lead before captain Curtis Lilako scored another to make it 19-0.
Oilers would reduce the deficit to 19-5 but former Homeboyz forward Max Kang’eri ensured the bankers went to the intervals with a 26-5 lead.
The Gibson Weru-coached side would try to launch a comeback in the second half with experienced Kenyan international Samson Onsomu and Geoffrey Ominde scoring two successive tries for a 26-20 scoreline.
However, the Curtis Olago-coached side with fast-rising scrum half Samuel Asati scored a beauty of a try with Mukidza adding another try for a 33-20 scoreline.
A last minute try from Micheal Kimwele would see the Bankers book yet another Kenya cup final against equal rivals Kabras Sugar.
Kabras Sugar and KCB have met in four Kenya Cup finals with the bankers prevailing on both occasions.
The final will be hosted in Kakamega after Kabras Sugar topped the regular season table.
On their part, Kabras ensured they sail through the finals courtesy of speedy winger Alfred Orege, eighthman Jeason Misoga, flanker George Nyambua and second-row Hillary Odhiambo who scored a try each on both halves to ensure the Sugarmen qualify for the finals.
Fijian-born Fullback Jone Kubu managed one conversion for two-time champions Kabras Sugar, who led 10-3 at the break.
Fly-half Henry Ayah slotted over a penalty for Quins in the first half with fullback Dominic Osino going for a try in the last points of the duel, but all was in vain for eight-time champions Quins who are currently coached by former Kenyan international Paul Murunga.
Quins will now shift their focus to the third-place playoff where they are scheduled to meet Menengai Oilers in the play-offs.
In the Women’s category, Mwamba RFC and Impala RFC ended the Women’s Kenya Cup semi-finals on a high note, securing impressive victories over Western Spears and Northern Suburbs, respectively.
Mwamba dominated their game against Western Spears, securing a 38-7 win at the RFUEA Grounds while Impala RFC on the other hand triumphed over Northern Suburbs, securing a convincing 26-5 victory.
