KCB banking on experience as fast-approaching playoffs come knocking

Former Kenya cup champions KCB RFC maintained their unbeaten run on top of the local rugby league with a 59-16 win over varsity side Catholic Monks on Saturday 4 February 2023.



The banker’s skipper Curtis Lilako, veteran Andrew Amonde, and Peter Waitere scored a brace each while Mike Kimwele, Thomas Okidia, and Elphas Adunga scored once each.



The ever-present fullback Darwin Mukidza kicked over seven conversions in a match that the bankers led 28-9 at the interval.



Courtesy of the win the unbeaten bankers are on top of the log with 40 points with only two games left to the playoffs.



Kenya cup defending champions Kabras sugar made sure they kept close tabs on the bankers and come in second on the log with 39 points following a 42-7 demolition of Mwamba at the Impala Club.



Nakuru-based Menengai Oilers come in third despite a 25-21 loss to Strathmore Leos with Kenya Harlequins coming in fourth after a hard-fought 22-21 victory over Nakuru at the latter’s backyard.



Blak Bald stays fifth on the log with 23 points after beating Mean Machine 35-27.



Masinde Muliro University earned their first win of the season after beating Homeboyz 21-10 but remains bottom of the log with seven points.



With only two games left to the playoffs, the weekend will pave way for the clash of the titans involving defending champion Kabras Sugar, former champions KCB, and Menengai Oilers in their quest to confirm the semi-final pairings.



The oilers will host KCB in the ninth leg on February 11 at the Nakuru Showground while the bankers have a date with Kabras Sugar on February 18 at the Ruaraka Sports Club.



In the Championship league, former Kenya cup side Nondescripts RFC ensured their march towards a comeback to the elite league was on course with a 62-13 win over Shamas at the Ngong Racecourse grounds.

The chasing pack of South Coast Pirates, Daystar Falcons, Kisumu, Kabarak University, and Impala Saracens all picked up crucial wins in their quest for playoff qualification.



Pirates on their part edged visiting Zetech Oaks 18-13 in Diani as Daystar Falcons won on the road, stopping hosts Eldoret 31-10 at the Eldoret Sports Club.



Kisumu won a difficult fixture at the University of Eldoret, defeating hosts UoE Trojans 15-8 as Kabarak University won at home, defeating USIU Martials 23-8 in Kabarak as Impala Saracens won at the Bull Ring, defeating Western Bulls 31-15.
