Kenya’s xenophobic attacks threaten business progress.
Kenya’s recent outbreak of xenophobic violence has threatened the progress of businesses in the country. China Square, a popular Chinese business in Kenya, has been the target of this violence. Trade, Investment and Industry Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria has now called for the company to cease operations in the Kenyan market. This decision could have a significant impact on the amount of trade and investment between Kenya and China.
Kuria, through his Twitter account, has revealed that he is in talks with Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Wainaina to buy out the lease for the retailer currently trading at Unicity Mall along Thika Road and hand it over to local traders. This is a significant move, as it would mean that local traders would gain a foothold in a prime location, and it would also bring much-needed jobs and income to the area.
I have today given an offer to Prof Wainaina the VC Kenyatta University to buy out the lease for China Square, Unicity Mall and hand it over to the Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa l and Eastleigh Traders Association,” Kuria stated. He continued, “This offer is in line with my promise to the traders of Gikomba, Nyamakima, Muthurwa and Eastleigh that I would work to ensure that they are able to do their businesses in a conducive environment. I believe that this offer will go a long way in creating a level playing field for all traders in Nairobi.”
Kuria cautioned that Chinese investors should not engage in trade with Kenya, noting that the latter country’s economy is not yet stable. He said that Chinese businesses should instead focus on investing in infrastructure projects that would benefit the Kenyan people.
Kenya’s xenophobic attacks threaten business progress.
The Kenyan government welcomes Chinese investment but is keen to ensure that it takes the form of manufacturing rather than trading. Kenya is keen to build its manufacturing sector in order to create jobs and boost economic growth. Chinese investment can play a key role in helping to achieve this goal. However, the government is keen to ensure that Chinese investors do not simply set up businesses that engage in trade. Instead, the government wants Chinese investors to set up manufacturing businesses that will help to boost the Kenyan economy.
China Square is the newest one-stop mall in the country and it has been gaining major traction from city dwellers. The mall is currently among the most flooded retailers in Kenya, with people often coming in to shop for their favourite items. The mall offers a variety of stores, ranging from clothes and accessories to food and drink. There is also a movie theatre and a bowling alley, making it the perfect place to spend a day or two. China Square is quickly becoming the go-to place for shopping in Kenya, and it is easy to see why.
Various Kenyans who have shopped in the new mall say that it stocks a wide range of products and services. These include stationery, electrical appliances, furniture, makeup and accessories, home decoration items, and cleaning supplies, among many others. There is something for everyone at this mall, and shoppers are sure to find what they are looking for.
