The Immigration department will receive up to KSh1.3 billion in appropriation in aid in financial year 2023/2024 to enable the acquisition of new equipment, including printers, and revamping the department’s infrastructure.
Kindiki made this announcement during his visit to Nyayo House, Nairobi, on Thursday, emphasizing that the move is intended to elevate the quality of services provided to citizens across the nation.
During his impromptu visit, Kindiki engaged with both citizens and staff members to explore avenues for improving services within the department, which has been riddled with allegations of bribery and extortion in recent months.
The Interior CS stated that no person will be allowed to hang around Nyayo House adding that access will only be granted to applicants with the necessary documents and staff members.
“The crackdown on cartels extorting applicants of passports and other vital citizenship documents at the immigration department is on, and all those involved in the criminal acts will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” he said.
To facilitate an orderly processing of passports and other citizenship documents, Kindiki said the Immigration department had set up special desks to fast track all emergency applications, including those of persons seeking medical care, academic opportunities and job openings.
The Interior CS maintained that no applicant should spend any money to facilitate faster processing and issuance of passports.
He assured Kenyans that the backlog of 44,000 applications will be resolved within 14 days, adding that all subsequent applications will be processed expeditiously.
Kindiki warned officers working at the Immigration department against extorting citizens, in the name of speeding up the processing of the vital document, saying they will be held to account.
“A majority of the officers in the Immigration department are professional, dedicated, and patriotic. They deserve to be commended and facilitated to undertake their duties diligently,” he said.
“The few officers who are colluding with brokers to demand bribes from applicants of passports and other vital documents will be dealt with firmly.”
