Faith Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic winner in the 1500 meters, kept up her impressive form with a win in the women’s 5000 meters at the World Championships trials in Nyayo Stadium.
After breaking the world records for the 1500 and 5000 meters in a week’s time, Kipyegon was competing for the first time.
The two-time world champion won the 12-and-a-half-lap race in 14 minutes, 53.90 seconds, ahead of the national champion Lilian Kasait, who finished in second position in 14 minutes, 56.50.
Margaret Chelimo, who won bronze in the 10,000 m world championships, finished third in 15:07.49 to clinch the last spot in the world championships.
In the 1500 meters, Kipyegon, who will be vying for her third global title, has said she will compete in both events in Budapest.
“I am pleased to have won today’s race after running 5000 meters. My primary goal in Budapest is to defend my 1500-meter title, but I also plan to compete in the 5000-meter event to help me progress. Everything requires effort, and I am confident that I will succeed in Budapest, stated Kipyegon.
