Goalkeeper Andre Onana’s £47.2 million (55 million euro) transfer from Inter Milan to Manchester United has been finalized.
The 27-year-old international from Cameroon has agreed to a five-year deal with a possible 12-month extension.
The former Ajax goalkeeper will go to the United States with the United team for their preseason tour as part of the contract, which is initially valued at £43.8 million with a potential add-on value of £3.4 million.
He declared, “Joining Manchester United is a wonderful honor.
“I have struggled my entire life to reach this point, overcoming many challenges.”
As United’s starting goalkeeper, Onana will take the place of David de Gea, who left the club in July when his contract expired after 12 years with the team.
“Another incredible experience will be going out at Old Trafford to defend our goal and help the squad,” Onana continued.
“This is the beginning of a new journey for me, with new teammates and new ambitions to fight for, Manchester United has a long history of incredible goalkeepers, and I now will give everything to create my own legacy in the coming years.”
“I have faith that Ten Hag will succeed.”Onana added
Onana won three league titles while playing at Ajax for seven and a half years under United manager Erik ten Hag. In 2021, Onana was given a nine-month suspension for a doping offense.
Onana helped Inter get to last season’s Champions League final, when they fell victim to Premier League champions Manchester City, after joining Inter on a free transfer in July 2022.
Onana said, “I am thrilled by the chance to work with Erik ten Hag once more, and I can’t wait to contribute to the success I know he is committed to bring at this wonderful football club.”
He recorded the most clean sheets of any goalie with eight in 24 Serie A games as Inter finished third, plus 13 in the Champions League last year, giving him a total of 104 in 255 club appearances.
Onana left Inter with the following social media comment just before his departure was officially announced: “I don’t know if I was the best, but I always gave my best.”
“Andre was our top choice to become the new goalkeeper for Manchester United, with exactly the right profile of technical attributes and personality,” said United’s football director John Murtough. “Andre has had success throughout his career, so we are confident that he will further contribute to the winning culture we are cultivating inside our team.”
“At the age of 27, he is already regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the world, and we are confident that he will continue to improve in the years to come.” said Murtough.
After having a disagreement with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song at the World Cup, Onana announced his retirement from international football in December.
