Evans Kamau the main suspect in the murder of his 34 year old wife Esther Njigi has been granted a cash Bail. A three judge bench of the appellate court has ordered that Kamau pay of a cash bail of Ksh 5 million or a bond of ksh 10 million or and two sureties of a similar amount.
Kamau is accused of stabbing his wife Esther Njigi 17 times in August of 2021 at their home in Elmark Estate in Juja subcounty, Kiambu county. Through his lawyer, Kamau argued that the trial court had no firm basis for denying him bail.
Justices Asike- Makhandia, Agnes Kalekye Murgor and Sankale Ole Kantai who presided over the appeal heard that the earlier grounds given by the court to continue holding him had been fulfilled but new ones were set, frustrating his plea for bail.
Kamau, who pleaded not guilty to the charges before him when the trial commenced on 7 March, 2022, is said to have stabbed his wife to death in front of their children according to an affidavit signed by his mother-in-law.
The court has directed Kamau to keep out of their matrimonial house where the children and his mother-in-law are currently living in.
