Omollo stars for KCB as Kabras extend their unbeaten run

Andy Cole Omollo delivered a standout performance as KCB RFC extended their unbeaten run in the 2024/25 Kenya Cup season, overpowering Kenya Harlequins 38-16 in a thrilling Saturday afternoon clash at the KCB Sports Club, Nairobi.
Quins started strongly, with kicker Evin Asina slotting in a penalty 10 minutes into the match to hand the visitors a 3-0 lead.
However, the bankers swiftly responded, with Elvis Olukusi crossing over for the first try. Michael Wamalwa followed with another try, which Austin Sikutwa successfully converted, pushing KCB ahead to 12-3.
Asina added another penalty for Quins, but Omollo ensured KCB tightened their grip on the contest with a well-executed try. Sikutwa once again converted, giving the hosts a comfortable 19-6 advantage at halftime.
The second half saw KCB extend their dominance, with Olukusi and Sikutwa getting on the scoresheet again.
Quins fought back with tries from Charles Kinyanjui and Dave Mwangi, but it was not enough to match the relentless pace of the bankers. KCB sealed the victory with a commanding 38-16 scoreline.
Speaking after the match, KCB Head Coach Oliver Mang’eni praised his side’s resilience and squad depth.
“We continued our fantastic run today. We have a great boost from players returning from the Shujaa 7s, and we will integrate them into the team gradually. We are also giving opportunities to players who have been working hard in training, which allowed Captain Jacob Ojee to rest today. The goal is to have all players ready for the Kenya Cup.”
KCB forward Davis Chenge, who captained the side in Ojee’s absence, acknowledged areas needing improvement.: “We conceded some easy tries today, but we will work on tightening our defence in the next games.”
With this victory, KCB have now gone seven matches unbeaten in the 2024/25 Kenya Cup season. The bankers will shift their focus to the knockout stages of the Enterprise Cup next weekend, where they will face Nondescripts before meeting them again on February 15 in the Kenya Cup.
On the other hand defending champions Kabras Sugar’s perfect point scoring and unbeaten record continued on Saturday after the Carlos Katywa outfit hammered Kenyatta University’s Blak Bald RFC 65-6 at the Kakamega Showgrounds.
The win saw Kabras three seasons unbeaten run continue as they stretched their lead at the top to 35 points after seven wins in their opening seven matches of the 2024-2025 season.
Hillary Odhiambo gave the sugar men a deserved early lead after crossing the white wash for a 7-0 with the returning Jone Kubu converting the try.
Patrick Lumumba stretched the scores to 12-0 with an unconverted try before the university students grabbed a penalty for 12-3.
Jeanson Misoga soon made it 19-3 after Kubu added the extras as big man Ephraim Oduor joined in on the party with the bonus point try for a 26-6 half time lead, a try that was converted by Kubu before Blak Blad got their second penalty score up.
In the final half, Lumumba grabbed his brace that Barry Young converted for 33-6. Collins Indeche joined in with another try that Barry converted for 40-6.
Barry then went over for a try that he converted to stretch the lead to 47-6 as returning Kenya Sevens star William Mwanji made it 52-6 with an unconverted try.
Odhiambo who started the onslaught finished it by grabbing his brace before captain George Nyambua approved the win with the last try for a 65-6 win.
