Maraga heeds GenZ call: 2027 bid launched

In a dramatic turn of events, former Chief Justice David Maraga has accepted a clarion call from Kenya’s youth to contest the 2027 presidential elections, positioning himself as the antidote to a political class accused of betraying citizens.
Speaking at Rongo University during a public lecture on governance, Maraga delivered a blistering critique of the current leadership, vowing to champion the fight against corruption, injustice, and extrajudicial killings.
The endorsement by Generation Z activists—who have grown disillusioned with both President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga—signals a seismic shift in Kenya’s political landscape.
Maraga, renowned for his fearless stand on judicial independence during his tenure, declared that the time had come for leaders of integrity to rescue the nation from the clutches of self-serving politicians.
His address was punctuated by roaring applause as he directly responded to youth-led chants of ‘Maraga Tosha!’ (Maraga is Enough!).
“I have listened to the cries of young Kenyans who feel abandoned by their leaders. When I see the rampant corruption, the blatant injustice, and the bodies piling up from police killings, I cannot stay silent,” Maraga declared.
“If the youth believe I am the one to lead this fight, then I accept their call. I will not watch Kenya burn while politicians dine with the oppressors.”
His remarks come amid growing frustration over the perceived collusion between President Ruto’s administration and the opposition, with critics accusing both sides of prioritizing power-sharing deals over public welfare. Maraga has accused the political elite of “joining hands to oppress the very people they swore to serve.”
Battle against corruption and impunity
Maraga, who once nullified a presidential election in a historic 2017 Supreme Court ruling, positioned himself as the embodiment of accountability. He pledged an uncompromising war on graft, which he termed “the cancer eating Kenya alive.”
“How can a child in Migori go hungry while billions are stolen in Nairobi? How can a widow wait 20 years for justice while thieves walk free?”he posed.
“I have seen the rot from inside the system. If given the mandate, I will ensure no one is above the law—not the president, not the judges, not the police.”

His message resonated deeply with students and activists in attendance, many of whom have been at the forefront of anti-government protests.
“Maraga is the only leader who has ever stood for truth,”said Linda Atieno, a 22-year-old Rongo University student. “We trust him because he has no blood on his hands.”
GenZ’s kingmaker role
Political analysts suggest that Maraga’s alliance with GenZ could redefine Kenya’s electoral dynamics. The youth bloc, which comprises over 60% of registered voters, has grown increasingly vocal, demanding an end to dynastic politics and systemic corruption.
“This is a rebellion against the old guard,” remarked political analyst Martin Andati. “Maraga represents the values GenZ wants—transparency, justice, and servant leadership. If he mobilizes this energy, he could upset the 2027 race.”
While Maraga did not explicitly announce his party affiliation, insiders hint at a possible grassroots-driven movement. His speech today was laced with populist undertones, as he promised to “return power to the people.”
“Leadership is not about titles or wealth. It is about lifting the mama mboga, the boda boda rider, the unemployed graduate,” he asserted. “If you want change, then stand with me. But be warned—this fight will not be easy.”
