Odinga and Gachagua: Power brokers or political Survivors?

After the AU contest the country is geared towards another seismic shift, two names continue to dominate discussions — Raila Odinga and Rigathi Gachagua.
Despite their differing political backgrounds and ideological leanings, political buffs suggest both leaders are poised to become key kingmakers ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
As the political chessboard continues to evolve, one thing remains clear – both Odinga and Gachagua are likely to shape the course of Kenya’s next elections, whether from the ballot or behind the scenes.
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga remains a formidable figure in Kenyan politics, with decades of experience and an unwavering support base. His ability to rally opposition forces and influence electoral outcomes has earned him the reputation of a master strategist.
“Raila Odinga is not just a politician; he is an institution,” says political analyst Javas Bigambo.
“His influence is rooted in his ability to mobilize masses and form alliances that reshape Kenya’s political direction.”
Odinga’s recent engagements with international organizations and his perceived closeness to President William Ruto have fueled speculation about his next move. Will he contest once more, or will he throw his weight behind a preferred candidate?
“Odinga has always been pragmatic,” notes governance expert Mukhisa Kituyi. “He understands that kingmaking is sometimes more powerful than being on the ballot.”
Hounded Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has emerged as a critical player in the battle for Mount Kenya’s political soul. Despite internal rifts within the ruling United Democratic Alliance , he maintains a strong grip on the votes rich region, positioning himself as its ultimate defender.
“Gachagua has crafted a unique brand of grassroots politics that resonates with the Mount Kenya electorate,” says Senator Joe Nyutu. “His ability to consolidate this support will determine his bargaining power in 2027.”
There are growing indications that Gachagua may either challenge Ruto’s dominance within UDA or negotiate for a powerful role in the next government should his camp triumph. His positioning as a regional kingpin could make him an invaluable ally or a formidable opponent.
With the 2027 elections still two years away, speculation is rife on how Odinga and Gachagua will maneuver. If Odinga decides to back a candidate, it could significantly alter the race. Similarly, Gachagua’s control over Mount Kenya voters makes him a crucial factor in determining UDA’s success.
“Kenyan politics is fluid,” observes Bigambo. “What seems impossible today could be the defining moment of tomorrow. These two leaders hold significant sway over the electorate.”
